The First Guru Of Sikhs.

Shree Guru Nanak Dev Ji.

Guru Nanak Dev Ji was born on 15th April 1469 in the village of Rai Bhoi Di Talwandi, now known as Nankana Sahib, located in present-day Pakistan. His father, Mehta Kalu, was a village accountant, and his mother, Mata Tripta, was a deeply religious woman. Nanak had an elder sister named Bebe Nanaki, who recognized his divine nature early on and supported him throughout his spiritual journey.

From an early age, Guru Nanak displayed a unique inclination toward spirituality. Instead of engaging in typical childhood games, he preferred solitude and contemplation. He amazed his teachers with profound thoughts about God and the universe, even as a child. One of the most notable stories from his childhood is the “Sacha Sauda” (True Bargain), where his father gave him money to do business, but Nanak spent it on feeding the hungry – showcasing his values of compassion and selfless service.

Guru Nanak married Mata Sulakhni Ji, the daughter of a respected official. They had two sons – Sri Chand and Lakhmi Das. Though Guru Nanak fulfilled his household responsibilities, he never detached from his spiritual path.

At the age of 30, Guru Nanak had a divine experience while bathing in the Kali Bein (a river). He disappeared for three days. Upon returning, he spoke his first message:

“There is no Hindu, there is no Muslim.”
This profound statement wasn’t a denial of religions but a declaration that all humans are equal in the eyes of the Divine. From that moment, he began his lifelong mission of spreading the message of truth, unity, and love for all humanity.

🔸Four Udasis (Spiritual Journeys)

Guru Nanak embarked on four major spiritual journeys, known as Udasis, over a span of 25+ years. He traveled across India and beyond — to Tibet, Sri Lanka, Mecca, Baghdad, and various parts of the Indian subcontinent — to share his message.

Wherever he went, he challenged superstition, rituals, caste discrimination, and religious hypocrisy, and inspired people to connect with God through:

  • Naam Japna (Meditating on God’s Name)
  • Kirat Karni (Honest living)
  • Vand Chakna (Sharing with others)

His constant companion on these journeys was Bhai Mardana, a Muslim musician who played the rabab (a string instrument) while Guru Ji sang divine hymns.

Around 1522, Guru Nanak settled in Kartarpur (now in Pakistan) and established a spiritual community. Here, he taught people to live a truthful life, serve others, and remember God. Kartarpur became the first model of a Sikh society – without divisions of caste, religion, or status.
