A Great Dera Mukhi.
Shri Maan 108 Mahant Baba Uttam Singh Ji.
Your holy birth took place in the house of father Sardar Gian Singh Ji and mother Sat Bharai in the sweet Tiwana (Sargodha district), on Bikrami Sammat 1907. When you were 4 years old, according to the divine prophecy, your body developed a disease, for which your parents tried very hard to get treatment, but your body did not recover and even the doctors and healers expressed despair. Finally, your parents thought that now the child has become very sick, there is no medicine, what effort should be made. Night and day were being spent in these worries.
After much time had passed in this way, one day they started saying to each other that the saints and great men are kind and merciful, let us take you to the great men (there live great men in sweet Tiwana. Whose holy name was Shriman 108 Mahant Hari Singh Ji).
Thinking thus, they brought the child to the great men. They came and placed the child at the feet of the saints, bowed down and requested, “Poor Niwaz Ji! This child is your gift, he has been afflicted with a physical disease. We have tried many treatments, the disease does not go away, please remove the suffering of this child with your grace, so that we may become happy.” At that time, the full meaning of the Surah and the words of the verse-
“Surbir Bachan Ke Bali || Kaula Bapuri Santi Chhali ||3 ||” (Page 392)
The great men said, “Leave this child here at his place, he will become healthy by serving the Sadh Sangat. That is, give it to us, then he will become healthy, but if he stays at home, then he will remain unhappy.” This Mahatma was the seventh in the lineage of Baba Ghanaiya Sahib Ji.
In this way, after hearing the words from the holy mouth of the great man, the parents requested, “Oh poor Niwaz! Keep this child at your feet again, so that he may be happy and we may also be happy.” In this way, when Shri Maan Baba Utam Singh Ji came to the place of the great man with sweet tea, at that time the great man also made Kachhira drink at the same place and, seeing his mercy, cured all the diseases. As it is said – “Dukh Door Karan Jee Ke Datara” (page 392).
After getting healthy, the saints made a daily vow to fill the water of the langar, serve the saints and sadh agat who came, wash clothes, clean the utensils, prepare the langar and in the rest of the time, recite Gurmukhi. While doing this, he memorized the following verses of Sri Japji Sahib: Shabad Hazare, Rehrasi, Kirtan Sohila Anand Sahib, Sri Sukhmani Sahib and Asa Ji’s War etc. He used to recite Rehrasi Sahib Ji every evening and would prepare and bring Prasad daily in the presence of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. Thus, many years passed since he earned the service of the Sangat and received the happiness of great men, at that time he was sixteen years old.
At this time, while wandering around, Sri Maan Mahant Bhai Jawahar Singh Ji reached Mitta Tiwana, his rule was that wherever he went, he would definitely perform the Kirtan of Sri Asa Di War in the morning and the Chaokki in the evening. Here he stayed for 22 days and continued to perform Kirtan both times without Naga. While enjoying their beautiful and melodious Kirtan, Shri Maan Sant Hari Singh Ji prayed to him that you keep this young Utam Singh with you and teach him the method of this prophetic Kirtan, you will be very kind to him.
Sant Ji accepted this prayer with great joy, then after staying for a few days, when Shri Maan Sant Jawahar Singh Ji was ready to leave, Shri Maan Sant Hari Singh Ji came with him for some distance as a matter of respect and on the way he taught Sant Utam Singh Ji that he should serve his elders, should not let them lack in respect and from today onwards, he should know him as his Guru. In this, all the desires of the heart will be fulfilled. As in – “The service of the Satguru is successful if one does it with one’s mind” (page 644).
At that time, a saint, Mahant Hari Singh Ji, who lived in another dera in the same city, met him and wondered where he was taking this boy. Sant Hari Singh Ji replied that he was sending him with these great men. He will learn some virtues: he is a master of the art of music. He will teach the congregation in the future and he will praise the Lord himself. Then that saint said, “If the Maharaj learns this virtue, then he will no longer be of service to you. He will become weak and become corrupt.” The saints said, “If he does not remain of service to us, then he will become of service to himself. It is only good to be corrupt in the company of saints.”
As it is said, “Ganga is a place of worship, so Ganga is a place of worship, and it is not permissible to be corrupt in the company of saints.”
As it is said, “Ganga is a place of worship, so Ganga is a place of worship, and it is not permissible to be corrupt in the company of saints.”
Such as, “Ganga is a place of worship, so let it be a place of worship, and let Kabira Ram be a place of worship, and let it not Copper is bigger with Paras. So copper is gold. 3. Kabira is bigger with Santan. So Kabira is Rama. 4. 5. ” (Bhairu Sri Kabir Ji Ki, page 1158).
Thus Sant Hari Ji took leave and returned and Sant Jawahar Singh Ji took Sant Utam Singh Ji with him and reached Sri Amritsar on 1923 Bikram. At that time, he was sixteen years old and brought him to his residential place which was prepared by the elder elder Shri Mann 108 Sant Amir Singh Ji with his own hands in front of the Dera Gali Satowali in 1900 Bikram.
After Shri Mann 108 Sant Amir Singh Ji, Sant Gurdit Singh Ji became the Mahant of this Dera. After him, Sant Jawahar Singh Ji [Aap Ji was born in the house of his father S: Nand Singh Ji in the village of Shah Jivan. They were serving this place. The place was small and crude, there were only one or two residential huts. The poverty was so great that they used to earn a living by beating the drum and playing the flute, but the Guru’s feet had become very rich. Taking Sant Jawahar Singh Ji as their Guru, Baba Uttam Singh Ji continued to serve the elders of the dera. At the same time, he also became well acquainted with the study of Raga. He himself also studied the Santha of Sri Nanak Prakash, [Sri Mann Sant Baba Uttam Singh Ji studied Nanak Prakash once from Sant Jawahar Singh Ji, his Guru, and the second time from a student of the great poet Santokh Singh Ji.]
In the morning, he would reach the first chowki of Sri Harmandir Sahib Ji and attend the Kirtan of Sri Guru Ramdas Sahib Ji’s court. Then he would also offer his head to Sant Uttam Singh Ji and listen to the Shabad. When Sant Utam Singh Ji would recite the Shabad from his sweet voice, the congregation would start dancing in delight.
One day, a lover gave a duani to Sant Uttam Singh Ji while he was reciting Kirtan to the child, and he hid it and put it in his pocket. Sant Jawahar Singh Ji took care that after the end of the Kirtan, when he went to Hari’s steps to take Amrit, the saint asked him, “What has that lover given you?” Then he showed the duani and said, “Maharaj! I have given you a duani.” The saints said, “Amrit below, gold above, do not take the donation from here, throw it in the amrit.” Thus, throwing the Duani in the lake itself, they came to the camp. Sant Ji was the owner of such high thoughts.
Maharaj Sant Jawahar Singh Ji used to reach the pilgrimage of the Guru every year during Hola-Mohalla time. From here, he would climb on a horse and descend to Jandiala, walk three miles from Jandiala to Pandori, stay at Baba Bakale for the first night, from Baba Bakale go to Beas and take a train and descend to Jalandhar. From Jalandhar, he would go on a horse and descend to Hoshiarpur, then walk to him on foot. Shri Maan Sant Uttam Singh Ji also used to go with him every year. He would go there and play that sound of kirtan that would take everyone into detachment and make everyone attain samadhi.
Thus, Sant Jawahar Singh Ji always kept his mind fixed on the service of the Guru Ghar. He Baba had a beautiful Nishan Sahib built at Bakale on the day of Raksha Purnima, costing Rs. 1500, and since that day, the Raksha Purnima fair has been held every year. There were so many people who were experts in Rag Vidya that many famous Rag singers are proud to be his disciples, such as:
- [1] Bhai Shankar Das Ji, Mahant of Shahpur.
- [2] Bhai Sant Das Ji, Mahant of Chak Musa.
- [3] Bhai Das Ram Ji of Jhawarian.
- [4] Sant Jawahar Ram Ji of Shahpur.
- [5] Sant Jodh Singh Ji.
- [6] Bhai Jawahar Singh Ji Surdas [Tarn Taran]
- [7] Bhai Suchet Singh Ji [Dargahi Shah].
- [8] Bhai Hari Singh Ji Shah Jivane Wale.
- [9] Bhai Kahan Singh Ji of Bagan [who used to stay with Mata Narain Dei Ji and sing Une Sahib Kirtan].
- [10] Bhai Sobha Singh Ji of Amritsar [he was the priest of Baba Bikram Singh Ji’s Samadh].
- [11] Shri Mann Sant Baba Uttam Singh Ji. He taught many people.
Bhai Chet Singh, Bhai Ram Singh, Bhai Jassa Singh Ji always sang the kirtan of Sri Harmandir Sahib Asa Ji in the morning. The saints had great love for them, whenever they went to Sri Harmandir Sahib, the musicians would respectfully seat them in the front. The saints would definitely sing a single Shabad to gain the audience’s attention, then sit back and when the time came, they would return to Dera Auna. Thus, a long time passed in serving Sant Jawahar Singh Ji. The great man was pleased and registered the will of the dera in his name on 26 Maghar 1945 Bikmi, as per 9 December 1888 AD, and Sant Jawahar Singh Ji went to live in Garcharan on 23 December 1888 AD, Poh Wadi Teej 1945 Bikmi.
You have done many great deeds by taking charge of the Dera. One of your great deeds is this great deed that you have written the holy book of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji with your own hands and completed it from beginning to end. From the very beginning, you had a great interest in teaching the writing and reading of Gurbani. At one time, your disciple Sant Amir Singh Ji, the great Brahmo Gyani, requested you for this auspicious work, but your body was weak and you had a chronic disease of asthma. You told many writers that if you do this service, you will be given money, but no one dared to take up this great work. Therefore, Sant Amir Singh Ji requested you, Maharaj! Take the initiative yourself, perhaps through this service your asthma will go away. Thus, you wrote the entire Bir by hand [which is revealed at the Dera every Sangrand and during Akhand Paths], and in collaboration with you, Shri Maan Sant Kirpal Singh Ji wrote the last ragas of it, then he revealed many Birs and refined them with great effort. You also made the entire Dera building strong and brought it to this beautiful color.
Throughout your life, you used to go to the court of Sri Guru Ram Das Ji at Amrit Velay without a Naga and return after offering one Shabad.
Shri Maan Brahm Gyani Sant Baba* Sham Singh Ji [who, as per the rule, continued to perform the first chowki with a headscarf in Sri Harmandir Sahib Ji every morning at Amrit Velay for seventy years, and during the Kar Sewa of Amrit Sarovar, Satguru also gave you the honor of being included among the five beloveds], you had immense love for him. Whenever he would reach the Golden Temple, Baba Sham Singh Ji would request him to recite a shabad and would come with the headscarf. He would make one of his servants sit beside him to pick up the headscarf. After the kirtan was over, that servant would bring the headscarf. This was his daily rule. Then, if there was any defect in the headscarf, Baba Sham Singh Ji would send it to him to fix it. Thus, till the age of 110, he never hesitated to attend the Darbar Sahib of Sri Guru Ram Das Ji.
He had only two disciples, one was Shri Maan Brahm Gyani Sant Amir Singh Ji and the other was Shri Maan Sant Jiwand Singh Ji who was a resident of Jhang Maghiana. Bhai Jiwand Singh Ji spent his entire life in service at the feet of Aap Ji. One day, his body became very ill, so being pleased with the service of Bhai Jiwand Singh Ji, he wanted to give him the position of Mahant, but he requested. “Give the servant the gift of service. I am not entitled to the position of Mahant. Give the turban of Mahant to
Shri Maan Giani Amir Singh Ji. Because- “The throne is the one who deserves the throne.”(Page 1088)
After hearing these loving words, I gave the great man the blessing of the joy of liberation from life and wrote the Ashtam of Mahant in the name of Shri Maan Brahm Giani Sant Amir Singh Ji. Then his body recovered.
Thus Bhai Jiwand Singh Ji spent his entire life staying with the saints and serving them. When the holy story of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji was enjoyed on Wednesday, 20th Kattak Samvat 2004, 5th November 1947, he enjoyed this story and performed all the service of the storehouse of the story and achieved the happiness of the Sangat and on 22nd Kattak Samvat 2004, 7th November On Friday, 1947, he climbed the mountain while reciting Sri Japji Sahib Ji and was cremated on Saturday, 23rd Katak, i.e. 8th November, 1947. He had immense love for Baba Sham Singh Ji’s Dera because after Baba Sham Singh Ji Maharaj went to Sachkhand, the Sangat had installed him as the Vice President in the Dera Committee.
The senior presidents in the 11-member committee were 1. Mahant Bhai Jawahar Singh Ji Mithi Wale who was the Mahant of Hoshiarpur Dera. 2. The Vice President was Sri Maan Mahant Uttam Singh Ji. The names of the other members are as follows: 3. Shri Mann Baba Jhanda Singh Ji Mahant Dera Baba Sham Singh Ji Atta Mandi Amritsar. 8. Shri Mann Sant Manna Singh Ji Dera Baba Sham Singh Ji Atta Mandi Amritsar. 5. Shri Mann Mahant Jamit Singh Ji Dera Shri Mann Mahant Bhola Singh Ji Katra Karam Singh Amritsar. 6. Shri Mann Mahant Tara Singh Ji Katra Karam Singh. 7. Shri Mann Mahant Budh Singh Ji. 8. Shri Mann S: Kishan Singh Ji Gandh. 9. Shri Mann S: Thakur Singh Ji Gandh. 10. Shri Mann S: Harnam Singh Ji Chaul Mandi. 11. C Mann S: Sandar Singh Ji Manyar.
When the venerable Sant Manna Singh Ji reached Garcharan on Friday, 18 Bhadar, December 2, 1960, Bhadar Sadi Dadasi, at 8:15 pm, he found out about him at night. With compassion in his heart, he went to Baba Sham Singh Ji’s dera at 5 am and, in great dispassion, he recited these verses: “Baba spoke and said.” And he told Sant Manna Singh Ji’s disciple Bhai Narain Singh Ji that the procession of the saints should be taken out with great pomp and if anything is needed, Das is present, bring it from the dera. Then the Mahant Sahib Ji gave fifty rupees to Giani Kirpal Singh Ji and said to him, “Go and give it to Baba Ji. And pray that whatever other thing is needed, tell me.” So Giani Kirpal Singh Ji went to the dera and gave the money to the saints and also gave the message of the Mahant Sahib Ji, then along with the body, he went to the cremation ground. While sitting at the Dera, Shri Maan Mahant Uttam Singh Ji told Bhai Harbhajan Singh Ji to tell Sant Kirpal Singh Ji to send a lover to recite Sri Sukhmani Sahib Ji near the pyre of Sant Manna Singh Ji. Then Bhai Harbhajan Singh Ji requested that Maharaj! Please grant this service to me only. He went and recited Sri Sukhmani Sahib Ji near the pyre with great love. Thus, he had immense love for Gurbani and the saints. He spent his entire life in Guru Seva. When Mahant Bhai Jawahar Singh Ji performed the service of Baba Bakale Sahib’s Gurdwara by grinding lime with his own hands, he also continued to participate in all the service.
At one time, the Sikhs requested Anandpur Sahib Dasham Patshah Ji that the true Patshah! Your Holiness, the protector of the Hindu religion, Guru Pita, the penance place of Bakale Sahib Wala Bhora, where the ninth Patshah Ji performed penance for 26 years, should be built a beautiful Gurdwara, then you replied that the service of that place will be done by our beloved Sikh Sadhus, the ones from the Kachhreya. So this sacred word of Kalgidhar Ji was fulfilled by Shri Maan Mahant Bhai Jawahar Singh Ji. Your Holiness has already been mentioned earlier that he used to earn his living by beating the ants and beating the ants.
Although other sadhus and students of the Dera used to recite the Bani to him at all times, one devotee made it a rule to recite the Path of Sri Sukhmani Sahib every day, whose name is Bhai Harbhajan Singh Ji. He started reciting the Path of Sri Sukhmani Sahib Ji by appearing in the service of Sri Maan Mahant Baba Uttam Singh Ji Maharaj on Basant Panchami 1 Phaggan Sammat 2015 Thursday [12 February 1959]. When the Bhog of Sakhmani Sahib Ji was being performed, then daily, the great Mahant Baba Uttam Singh Ji used to recite this-
“Sukhmani is the source of happiness. Reading and listening to it, the works are completed. Sukhmani is read day and night. Sukhmani is the gift of happiness. Sukhmani, if anyone reads it, is heard. May the mind attain the desired fruit. May the reader of Sukhmani rejoice. May what he says on the mouth be fulfilled. May Sukhmani be heard every day. May men be saved in the ocean of life.
At first, he would come once in the morning and recite it. When he had been reciting it for about five months, he would ask, “Do you eat bread once or twice?” He said, “Yes, I eat it twice.” Then he said, “Then why do you feed us once?” He would also recite the paath to us twice. From that day on, he started reciting the paath twice. He was so fond of the Bani that he would often wake up in the middle of the night and say, “Has Harbhajan Singh not come yet?” What time is it? Take us to Sri Darbar Sahib. Then the servant said, Maharaj! It is midnight now.
Thus, having spent his entire life in Naam Bani, at the age of 110, he listens to the Sukhmani Sahib Ji’s path as per the daily rules, and after performing Samadhi like a Yogi, he sits in Saroop at 9 o’clock and leaves his robe around 1 o’clock. After that, the path of Sri Sukhmani Sahib Ji has been continuously performed by his five ghostly bodies all day and night for twenty and a half hours till 9:30 am the next day. The music of Kirtan continued outside and many Raagis came and performed Kirtan. In which the Jatha of Bhai Uttam Singh Ji Sindhi, the resident Raagi of Sri Harmandir Sahib Ji, also came and performed Kirtan in Maru Raag and Punjab Sangeet Wale also brought him to Vairag through Kirtan.
4 Paths of Sukhmani Sahib Ji were performed by Bhai Harbhajan Singh Ji and the rest of the devotees also participated. After taking bath for half an hour or coming out of the dera, priest Bhai Darshan Singh Ji was standing with a siropa from Sri Harmandir Sahib Ji, that siropa was placed on the biban of Sri Maan 108 Mahant Baba Uttam Singh Ji, after him other Mahants also put on silk sheets. Seva Panthi Addan Shahi Maha Purush, Nirmal Bhekh De Maha Purub Udasin Bhekh De Maha Purush, city lovers, Shabad Chowkian Wale Gurmukh Jan and Granthi Singh Sahib of Sri Harmandir Sahib Ji Giani Kirpal Singh Ji Giani Chet Singh Ji etc. all the dignitaries joined. With the band playing and the sound of the Narsinghs, the Arabi procession left the Satwala Dera at exactly 10 o’clock and went to the rice market, the Paparan market, the Kathian market, and after paying homage, they went home and reached Guru Ramdas Ji’s Sarai, Baba Sahib, Chowk Karori, Bibeksar, Ramsar and reached the crematoriums. There was a huge crowd at the crematoriums and from 9 o’clock in the morning, Kirtan and Sakhmani Sahib Ji’s path continued in the crematoriums until 3 o’clock. Finally, after enjoying the path of Japji Sahib Ji, Bhai Sahib Bhai Mul Singh Ji offered prayers. Later, by the command of God, the five ghostly bodies were set on fire. Then, according to the Guru’s custom, they came to Bibeksar, where the throne of Shri Maan 108 Brahm Gyani Baba Sham Singh Ji was adorned with a pot of Karah Prasad brought by Shri Maan 108 Mahant Baba Jhanda Singh Ji Maharaj. First, Kirtan Sohile Ji was recited by Granthi Singh Ji. Then Anand Sahib Ji was recited, after which Shri Maan 108 Mahant Mool Singh Ji performed the Ardas and the order came – Sorathi Mahla 5.
The Guru has placed his feet on the ground. He has found support from the Lord. Wherever he goes, he is happy. May the Lord’s grace be with him. 1. May he always sing the praises of the Lord. May all that he thinks of be lost, and may he be supported by the Lord. 11. May Narayan remain as a support. We are the saints who are born. May the impure be purified. May the Lord’s grace be with us. May the Lord’s grace be with us. May the Lord’s grace be with us. May the Lord’s grace be with us. May the Lord’s grace be with us. May he be the protector of us. May he sing the Kirtan every day and night. May he find many lives. 3. May the Lord who gives knowledge to the Lord. May the Lord’s grace be with us [Page 623]
Then the Karah Prasad was used and the Sangat returned to the Dera, took bath and shared Prasad.
Then on the fourth day, 20 Poh, 3 January 1961, at 8 am, Maha Purakh Giani Kirpal Singh Ji, along with the Sangat, reached Masan Bhoomi from the Dera in the form of a procession, reciting Shabad Kirtan. Ahead of him, the Udasin Mahatmas, Mahants, and Sant Narsinghs had reached there amidst the throngs of devotees. On that day, since early morning, the devotees from the Dera had reached Masan and were reciting Sukhmani Sahib. After the Bhog of Sukhmani Sahib, the Raagi Bhai Ji, who had come from Ludhiana, was reciting Gurbani in a melancholic and dispassionate manner. The Sangat also went and enjoyed the kirtan. Then after reciting Japji Sahib Ji, choosing flowers and in the form of a procession, the Saheb Maha Purakh reached the Dera, reciting “Satnam Wahigra” and reciting Kirtan.
At that time, putting the flowers of Shri Maan Baba Uttam Singh Ji in a basket and placing them on a beautiful bed, all the Sangat offered their obeisances and from that time, the devotees began to recite Sri Sukhmani Sahib Ji’s path near the flowers. As long as the flowers remained in the Dera, eight-hour path continued. On the fourth day itself, the normal path began in the memory of Shri Maan Baba Uttam Singh Ji, whose Bhog Kriya was held on Thursday, 29 Poh 2017, i.e. 12 January 1961. On the fourth day, the flow of Sri Akhand Paths also continued. Then, in the form of a procession, to take the ashes of Aap Ji to Haridwar, three jeeps passed through the markets. At 10:00 PM, the train was brought to the station. The evening train, filled with recitation of Bani, Kirtan and meditation, left for Haridwar with the following lovers:

While they were saying such words of disinterest, the train started and said, “We will sit in the car and reach Haridwar station before you.” So they reached Haridwar before the train arrived.
